Why Real Wood

Why spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on your home and then hang mass-produced plastic shutters beside the windows? Real wood shutters turn an ordinary house into a classic. They have depth the molded stuff never gets: a louver you can see light through, a panel with a shadow line, stiles and rails with real thickness.

Every Sunbelt wood shutter is made to order in our own shop in Alabama from furniture-grade Select Grade lumber out of managed forests. Nothing is out-sourced, which is how we can cut each shutter to your window to the eighth of an inch and how we can stand behind the work. Your shutters look like they were made for your home, because they were.

Wood also gives you the widest range of choices. You can hang a shutter that actually closes, add a faux tilt rod, arch the top to a spring line, cut out a crescent moon, run horns and tails for a period look, or match a color we mix for you. If you plan to paint, we recommend the primed finish — it ships ready for your finish coat.

Choose Your Wood

All four are furniture-grade Select Grade from managed forests. If you plan to paint, pine is the value choice; for grain under a stain, look at Red Grandis or mahogany. Board & batten shutters add a fifth option, Rough Sawn Cedar, for a weathered texture. Prefer no wood at all? The same styles are available in Extira composite.

  • Southern Yellow PineDense, strong, and the best value in the line. Takes primer and paint beautifully.
  • Incense CedarNaturally resistant to rot and insects, light in weight, and stable in humid air.
  • Red GrandisA clear, close-grained eucalyptus hardwood from managed plantations. Excellent for stain.
  • African MahoganyThe premium choice. Rich color, exceptional stability, and a grain worth showing off.

Finishes

  • UnfinishedReady for you to prime and paint yourself.
  • PrimedGeneral Finishes Enduro White Undercoat, an exterior water-based primer tinted medium grey. Recommended if you plan to paint.
  • PaintedGeneral Finishes Exterior 450 water-based topcoat, satin. In-stock colors or a custom color match.
  • Stain-GradeHand-selected best pieces of wood in the lot. Staining services are not offered.

Wood, Composite or Vinyl?

All three hang beside your windows. They are not the same product, and the right one depends on what you need it to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wood are your shutters made from?

We build in four furniture-grade Select Grade woods from managed forests: Southern Yellow Pine, Incense Cedar, Red Grandis and African Mahogany. Pine is the value choice for a painted shutter; Red Grandis and mahogany show the best grain under a stain. Rough Sawn Cedar is also available on board & batten shutters.

Which wood shutter style should I choose?

Louvered is our best seller and suits Colonial, Cape Cod, Georgian and coastal homes. Raised panel gives a formal Colonial look. Board & batten fits farmhouse, Tudor and rustic homes. Bahama shutters hinge at the top and angle out for shade, a coastal and Florida favorite.

How much do custom wood shutters cost?

Price depends on style, size, wood and finish. Louvered shutters start at $105 per pair, raised panel at $117 per pair, board & batten at $117 per pair, and Bahama shutters at $152 each. Quantity discounts are available for contractors and installers, whether you need 10 pairs or 1,000.

How long does it take to build wood shutters?

Wood shutters ship in approximately 6–8 weeks. Every shutter is built to order in our own shop, so nothing is pulled off a warehouse shelf. If you need a faster turnaround, our Extira composite shutters ship in about 3–4 weeks and come primed at no charge.

Do wood shutters qualify for free shipping?

Yes. We offer free shipping on shutters less than 24" wide and 76" tall. Larger sizes ship with an Oversize Shipping Fee. See our Shipping Information page for details.

Are your wood shutters covered by a warranty?

Yes. Since we build the shutters, we stand behind them with our 5-year material and workmanship warranty, the best in the business for custom-built shutters.
